Good research dies without marketing.

I wanted to try Jev, TypeSafe AI’s new System One model. I got a waitlist.

While I waited, I found Laya. Open weights, a paper, a dataset, an Apache-2.0 licence, and an author who had been publishing this idea since March 2025. It ran on my laptop the same afternoon.

The model was good. The marketing was a Reddit post. So this page is the marketing.

Later I got access to the Jev API and ran both models on the same 500 labelled examples. Jev is more accurate out of the box. Laya is faster from my desk, free, and open, so you can fine-tune it. The numbers are on the main page the way they fell.

The model
Laya is created by Nandakishor M of Convai Innovations. He designed it, trained it on a single GPU and released it under Apache-2.0: code, weights, his own demo, his write-up. In his words: “It can be run on low end PC as its a small 421M model.”
The research
SalesRLAgent (arXiv 2503.23303, March 2025), a reinforcement-learned model that outputs probabilities turn by turn, with its model and dataset. Then confidence-aware routing (arXiv 2510.01237, September 2025). Both are his.

Who was first.

  1. Nandakishor M publishes SalesRLAgent: reinforcement learning that outputs calibrated probabilities instead of text. Paper, model and dataset are open.
  2. His second paper: routing decisions by model confidence.
  3. TypeSafe AI launches Jev, a hosted System One model. Closed weights, early access, a waitlist.
  4. He releases Laya: the same idea made general. 421M parameters, open weights, runs on a laptop.
